Experience the beauty of the Johnstone Strait and the unique Robson Bight Ecological Reserve on our 4 Day Basecamp Tour

Experience the ultimate adventure by launching off our pristine beach on the border of the Robson Bight Ecological Reserve. Immerse yourself in the untamed, inspiring, and magical environment of Warden Beach and Robson Bight Basecamp, which has been serving adventurers for over 40 years. Nestled in the heart of Orca territory, our campsite is adjacent to the world’s only designated Killer Whale habitat at Robson Bight (Michael Bigg) Ecological Reserve. The raw, rocky shores and the vast blue crescent engulfing this pure Canadian wilderness offer a unique opportunity for you to connect with nature. Even though it feels remote, it’s only a brief half-hour cruise from Telegraph Cove through the Johnstone Strait, one of the best places for whale watching on Vancouver Island.

At our base camp, you’ll spend days filled with awe-inspiring wildlife sightings and taking picturesque snaps of the stunning Orcas. Our basecamp is completely off the grid and unplugged, making it the perfect place to disconnect from urban living and reconnect with nature. And, most importantly, with each other. Come join us for an adventure of a lifetime and experience nature at its finest.

In 2023, AWE Adventures purchased Ecosummer Expeditions, one of the longest running eco-tourism companies on the pacific coast with over 50 years of operations. In homage to Ecosummer, we have kept the name running, however, Ecosummer is run by the exact same team as AWE Adventures. The same dedication to our guests, the environment and our staff remains strong. More information on our Robson Bight Basecamp Tour can be found on the Ecosummer website.

Overview of our 4-day Basecamp Tour

The Johnstone Strait is home to some of the highest levels of biodiversity in Canada. For four days, we will explore the ecosystem and discover a myriad of animals large and small — from microscopic plankton to the gargantuan humpback whale. These mighty mammals of the sea call Johnstone Strait their summer home, as do Steller sea lions, harbour seals, Dall’s porpoises, minke whales, northern resident orcas, the Biggs (transient) killer whales, and river and sea otters. Johnstone Strait boasts over fifty bird species living and migrating through the area, so keep your eye on the sky as well as the intertidal zone! There are tons of alien-like marine critters to admire alongside our more familiar birds and mammals. We promise you won’t be disappointed by the sheer number of amazing animals you’ll see — but do your best to let them pass peacefully!

Since our basecamp is only accessible by watercraft (such as a handy kayak), this journey is the perfect retreat amongst nature’s most basic yet impressive elements: pure water and fresh air. You’ll be well taken care of by our guides — they’ll make sure you’re well-fed, well-rested, and well-entertained… And of course, enjoying nature! So what are you waiting for? Come with us and explore the sea stars, anemones, nudibranchs, and so much more…
